Healthy chocolate nut spread
Move on, Nutella. Here it is, a three-ingredient super simple recipe to make the world's favorite chocolate spread. And you won't feel too guilty if you eat it all: the only thing is you'll have to make it again.
Not only it tastes better than the unhealthy original version (hazelnuts only count 13% after sugar and palm oil), but you'll get so much energy thanks to all the good fats and protein from the hazelnuts and the powerful anti-oxidant polyphenols in cacao. In summer we all need a little boost when the heat is so strong.
My favorite ways of eating it are over slices of bananas for a quick pre workout snack, on toast or porridge with some berries for breakfast or simply eaten directly from the jar, which is probably the most satisfying.
This spread is so versatile that you could even melt it in hot milk of your choice and make a hot hazelnut-ty chocolate. Make sure you use a whisk to dissolve all the lumps. You want to highlight the nut flavor? Add hazelnut milk. Pour some ice and you'll have an energetic cold drink.
Three ingredients and one powerful food processor: that's all you need. Ah, I forgot: one big tablespoon to scoop it from the jar!
2 cups of roasted unsalted hazelnuts
2 tablespoons of cacao powder
2 tablespoons of maple syrup or agave syrup
1 handful of chopped nuts of your choice (optional)
In a food processor add all the ingredients and blend until it becomes creamy. It could take up to 30 minutes, depending on the strength of your processor. I have a decent one, but not as strong as a Vitamix, so I had to turn it off for 5 minutes every now and then to cool it down. With the help of a spoon, scrape the sides to make sure everything gets blended uniformly. You'll notice that at some point towards the end the ingredients will form a hard ball in the processor; keep going, it's the final stage before it gets all buttery.
Transfer the spread in a jar and let it cool completely before storing it in the fridge. It lasts well for a couple of weeks, but I guarantee you it stores better inside your belly!
It's only optional but highly recommended: add the chopped nuts and mix well with a spoon once the nut butter is done. The crunchiness is to die for...you know Ferrero Roches? Way better.
